7.1" Cut Agatized Dinosaur Bone (Gembone) Vertebra - New Mexico

This is a partial, Sauropod dinosaur vertebra from the Morrison Formation of New Mexico preserved with very vibrantly colored agate replacement (gembone). It has been sliced in half and polished to reveal the amazingly colored, internal cell structure. Both halves are included and each measure around 7 x 5 x 2.5"

Nearly all of the gembone you see in from either Colorado or Utah, but this material we just acquired is from New Mexico.

About Gembone

Dinosaur gembone (agatized dinosaur bone) forms when the porous structure of dinosaur bone is replaced by silica-rich minerals like agate, chalcedony, or jasper. This preserves the bone’s internal cell patterns, creating striking, web-like textures visible when polished.

Most gembone comes from the Late Jurassic Morrison Formation of Utah and Colorado and can display vivid reds, browns, purples, blacks, or blues—depending on the minerals involved. Highly valued by collectors, jewelers, and lapidary artists, each piece is unique, offering a beautiful and tangible link to prehistoric life.
