7.4" Sparkling, Agatized Fossil Coral Geode - Florida

What we have for you is a spectacular specimen of agatized coral from the Basin Deposits of Florida. This fossil coral is Miocene (25-32 million years) in age, and was formed when fine sediments covered shallow coral reefs. As silica rich groundwater seeped through rock that was exposed as sea levels dropped, it replaced the calcium carbonate skeleton of the coral with chalcedony. This specimen is unique in that the chalcedony was covered by a later generation growth of druzy quartz crystals, giving one of the pockets an incredible sparkle. While exact identification is difficult to pin point, this specimen exhibits structures consistent with rugose coral. Agate filled portions of this coral specimen glows a phantasmal white color under short-wave UV light.
