.7 " Phytosaur (Redondasaurus) Tooth In Sandstone - New Mexico

This is a .7" Phytosaur (Redondasaurus) tooth still partially embedded in the sandstone in which it was found. This is base of the crow (enamel) of a tooth crushed during fossilization. The top half of the crown is missing but the apical (cutting edge) is still visible and has good serration.

Phytosaurs looked similar to modern day crocodiles with some differences. The main one being that their nostrils were up high on the head instead of at the very front of the snout. They grew up to 20 feet in length and were certainly one of the dominant predators at the time.
