9.8" Pleistocene Aged, Fossil Horse Metatarsal - Kansas

This is a 9.8" long cannon bone (metatarsal) from a Pleistocene aged fossil horse (Equus scotti), collected from the Arkansas River Alluvium in Sedgwick County, Kansas. There is a natural fracture that runs down the anterior face of this bone and there is minor damage to both the proximal and distal points of articulation.

Horses evolved in the Americas and spread to Asia and Europe. There are a number of species described from the fossil record in North America and their relationship is still being debated.
