Large Polished Ammonite Fossil With Stone Base - 7.8" Tall

This is a gorgoeus fossil display featuring a 7" wide Shloenbacchia ammonite from Khenifra, Morocco. The ammonite fossil has been polished revealing the inner chambers lined with crystals as well as the exquisite suture pattern. Some of the surrounding rock was left in place and sculpted to create a natural base which the ammonite stands upright on.

Ammonites were predatory cephalopod mollusks that resembled squids with spiral shells. They are more closely related to living octopuses, though their shells resemble that of nautilus species. True ammonites appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago during the Triassic Period. The last lineages disappeared 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous.
