Pennsylvanian Fossil Fern And Horsetail - Kentucky

This is a 1.8" fossil fern (Eusphenopteris) frond and a 1.2" horsetail (Annularia), from the Breathitt Formation, Leslie County, Kentucky. Eusphenopteris is an extinct family of seed ferns and Annularia is a vascular plant, resembling modern horsetail, that reproduces by spore. Both are from the Late Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian aged forests that formed the coal shales of Eastern Kentucky and Ohio.
