Huge, 17.3" Jurassic Ammonite (Kranosphincites) Fossil - Madagascar

This is a huge, 17.3" wide ammonite (Kranosphincites sp.?) fossil from Madagascar. It is Late Jurassic in age and was collected near Sakaraha in the Tulear Province of Madagascar. It's a beast, weighing over 51 lbs. There is some repair and minor restoration, as is the case with most of the larger ammonites that are fractured by geological forces while still in the ground. The surface of the ammonite has been lightly polished.

Comes with a metal display stand.

Ammonites were predatory mollusks that resembled squids with shells. These cephalopods had eyes, tentacles, and spiral shells. Though their shells resemble that of a nautilus, they are actually more closely related to living octopuses. Ammonites appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago, barely surviving several major extinction events. The last lineages disappeared 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous.
