Massive 11.3" Polished Ammonite With Stone Base

This is a stunning fossil display featuring a massive, 11.3" wide Shloenbacchia ammonite from Khenifra, Morocco. The ammonite fossil has been highly polished revealing the inner chambers lined with crystals as well as the exquisite suture pattern. Some of the surrounding rock was left in place and sculpted to create a natural base which the ammonite stands upright on.

Ammonites were predatory mollusks that resembled a squid with a shell. These cephalopods had eyes, tentacles, and spiral shells. They are more closely related to a living octopus, though the shells resemble that of a nautilus. True ammonites appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago. The last lineages disappeared 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous.
