Two Red Fossil Leaves (Aesculus & "Fraxinus") - Montana

This is an association of two fossil leaves (Aesculus hickeyi and "Fraxinus" eocenica) from the Fort Union Formation of Montana. The color of the rock and the leaf is rather unusual and different than most of the leaves seen from the Fort Union Formation. It was collected from a locality where a fire in a nearby coal seam "cooked" the rock at sometime in the past. This changed the color and gave it a chalky texture.

#8 - "Fraxinus" eocenica (3.8" long)
#12 - Aesculus hickeyi (6.6" long)

There are some areas of restoration on the surface of the leaf where there was some flaking onto the negative. An acrylic display stand is included.
