2.2" Villanueva Chondrite Meteorite (18.2 g) Slice - New Mexico

This is a 2.2" wide (18.2 gram) slice of the Villanueva (ordinary chondrite H6) meteorite, collected in San Migueal County, New Mexico. This specimen was provided by Blaine Reed.

The Villanueva meteorite was found in 1974 about a mile south-southeast of the location of the current Villanueva State Park (southeast of Santa Fe) by a man who has since passed away. Years later, his niece brought it into a mineral shop in Albuquerque where it was on display for years. A meteorite dealer passing through town in November 2014 stopped in and recognized that it was indeed likely a new local meteorite find. Since the meteorite was found in two pieces that fit together, he was able to negotiate buying the smaller of the two pieces on display. Later research work showed this to be an extensively recrystallized H6 common chondrite.
