Two Irgizite Tektites - Kazakhstan

This is a unique offering: two irgizite tektites from the Zhamanshin impact crater in western Kazakhstan. They weigh a total of 0.6 grams and come in an acrylic display case. The larger of the two measures 0.7 inches wide.

Irgizites are unusual tektites. Like other tektites and impactites they were formed when meteorite impacts superheated and threw surrounding rock into the atmosphere, where it quickly cooled as igneous glass. Irgizites are distinguished by their glossy, opaque black color and are often quite intricate, forming all sorts of globules, tubes, vesicles, and fibers. Compared to other tektites, irgizites are quite light.
