BANDED IRON FORMATIONS FOR SALE

Banded iron formations (BIFs) are geologically significant because they provide insight into the Earth’s early atmospheric conditions. The presence of these formations around the world indicates a time when the Earth’s oceans held vast quantities of dissolved iron and minimal oxygen. As oxygen levels began to rise, it combined with the iron, forming iron oxides and settling on the ocean floor in layered patterns. Over millions of years, these layers compressed and solidified into the durable rock we now call banded iron formations.
