About Epidote In Prehnite
Prehnite with epidote inclusions is a visually rich stone defined by layered textures and strong color contrast. Translucent to semi-translucent prehnite, typically in soft mint to apple-green tones, encloses sharp, dark green epidote crystals that appear suspended within the stone. These inclusions often form sprays, needles, or angular crystal clusters, creating intricate internal structures visible through the prehnite’s smooth, glossy surfaces.
Prehnite is a calcium aluminum silicate that commonly forms in botryoidal or massive habits within low-temperature hydrothermal and metamorphic environments, often lining fractures and cavities in basaltic rocks. Epidote is a calcium aluminum iron silicate that crystallizes as prismatic to bladed crystals under slightly higher temperatures and pressures, with its iron content responsible for its deep green coloration. When these two minerals grow together, epidote typically crystallizes first, later becoming enclosed by prehnite as fluid conditions evolve, preserving a clear record of changing chemistry and temperature during mineral formation.
