About Owyhee Opal
Owyhee blue opal is a distinctive variety of common opal found near Lake Owyhee in eastern Oregon, close to the Idaho border along the Snake River. Unlike many opals, its vivid blues develop gradually after mining: the material begins as translucent, but as it slowly loses water, it transforms into the soft to intense blue tones for which it is prized. The coloration is thought to be influenced by trace copper within the stone. Although it lacks the play of color associated with precious opal, Owyhee opal is cherished for its unique hues, clean linear patterns, and occasional agate-like zones, all of which make it a favorite among lapidaries and collectors.
