About Nellite
Nellite is a striking, semi-translucent gemstone best known for its swirling bands of gold, honey, and smoky blue. It forms as a rare variant within the tiger’s eye family, created when hawk’s eye (blue crocidolite quartz) and golden tiger’s eye intermingle during metamorphism. The result is a dynamic “stormy sunrise” effect—soft blues blending into warm amber hues—accentuated by the silky chatoyancy that makes these stones shimmer when turned under light. Nellite is primarily sourced from South Africa, where the geological conditions allowed iron-rich crocidolite fibers to transform into quartz while preserving their fibrous structure and vibrant coloration.
Nellite is sometimes referred to as “African Pietersite.” But true Pietersite has a broken, fragmented structure, while nellite is a smooth, non-brecciated variety.
