About "Fossil Bamboo" (Tubular Plant Casts) From Indonesia
Often referred to as “fossil bamboo,” these striking specimens from Indonesia are agatized tubular plant casts formed when silica-rich fluids filled or replaced hollow plant stems in ancient volcanic sediments. Over time, the original organic material decayed, leaving behind natural agate and chalcedony tubes that preserve the external shape and segmented appearance reminiscent of bamboo.
While commonly marketed under the name fossil bamboo, these specimens are not typically true fossilized bamboo wood, which is extremely rare in the fossil record. Instead, they represent a fascinating example of silicified plant pseudomorphs, valued for their unique structure, natural polish, and geological origin.
