2.8" Fluorescent Uranyl Chalcedony with Fluorite - Utah

This is an extremely cool, 2.8" wide specimen featuring uranyl chalcedony that formed in association with fluorite. It was collected from the SK Star #2 claim in Juab County, Utah. A mixture of white and vibrant green fluorescence can be seen when the specimen is placed under short-wave UV light.

About Uranyl Chalcedony with Fluorite

This material comes from SK Star Claim #2 in Utah's Thomas Range, where these unique, highly fluorescent mineral specimens containing uranium-activated chalcedony (often green under SW UV), fluorite, hyalite opal, and sometimes black topaz are collected. These minerals, especially the chalcedony, get their bright green glow from this trace uranium, making them prized by fluorescent mineral collectors for their vibrant colors and varied responses under UV light, with some minerals even showing mild radioactivity.

More on Uranyl-activated chalcedony: a form of chalcedony that contains uranium, causing it to fluoresce a brilliant green under short-wave UV light. It is the most common form of uranium found in nature and water.

Uranyl Ion Formula - (UO₂²⁺) shows a uranium atom bonded to two oxygen atoms.

Note: These specimens have all been tested and none are even remotely close to showing dangerous levels of radioactivity. Most are slightly above normal background radiation levels.
