Hypersthene is the historical name for a mineral that falls between enstatite and ferrosilite in chemical composition. It is formed when iron, magnesium and silica combine under high heat and pressure.
Hypersthene can be recognized by its distinctive lustrous, chatoyant shimmer. When the light hits it, intricate striped patterns appear and disappear within the dark stone.
It is 5.5-6 on the Mohs hardness scale.
