4.5" Botryoidal, Blue Chalcedony After Anhydrite - Peru

This is a fascinating formation of botryoidal blue chalcedony pseudomorphed after anhydrite crystals, collected from Rumipata, Peru. Remnants of the anhydrite crystals can be seen around the periphery of the specimen.

It comes with an acrylic display stand.

About Blue Chalcedony After Anhydrite From Peru

Blue chalcedony after anhydrite from Peru is an unusual silica replacement that preserves the presence of an earlier mineral without retaining its original crystal shape. Originally formed as anhydrite (calcium sulfate), the material was later altered by silica-rich fluids that replaced it with microcrystalline quartz (chalcedony). During this process, the original anhydrite dissolved and the chalcedony grew in smooth, rounded, botryoidal masses rather than angular crystal forms. The resulting specimens display softly contoured surfaces with a waxy to silky luster and calming blue to blue-gray coloration. These pseudomorphs are valued not for sharp geometry, but for their organic textures and as clear examples of mineral replacement—where composition changes completely while the geologic story remains visible.
