Idaho Sunset Jasper
Idaho Sunset Jasper is a vividly patterned jasper found in southern Idaho, celebrated for its brilliant play of warm colors that evoke a glowing desert sunset. This unique variety of jasper features swirling hues of red, orange, yellow, cream, and soft lavender, often accented by translucent agate-like zones that add depth and contrast.
Formed from ancient silica-rich sediments that were compressed and mineralized over millions of years, Idaho Sunset Jasper is a type of silicified rhyolite or jasperized volcanic ash. The iron oxides and trace minerals within it create the breathtaking palette of colors and flowing, scenic banding.
When polished, this material takes on a radiant luster, highlighting its layered patterns that resemble painted skies or desert landscapes. It’s highly sought after by lapidary artists and collectors for cabochons, display slabs, and decorative pieces. Each specimen captures the natural beauty and geologic artistry of Idaho’s rugged terrain—like holding a piece of the sunset itself.
