About the Cozamin Mine
The Cozamin Mine is a polymetallic underground mine located near the city of Zacatecas in north-central Mexico, within the historic Zacatecas Mining District. Mineralization occurs primarily in veins and fracture-controlled veinlets, particularly along the extensive Mala Noche Vein system, and is classified mainly as an intermediate-sulfidation hydrothermal deposit. Copper-rich mineralization formed during an earlier, higher-temperature phase and is commonly dominated by chalcopyrite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite, while later mineralization introduced significant sphalerite and other zinc, lead, and silver-bearing minerals. Quartz and calcite are the predominant minerals, though rhodochrosite, gypsum, barite, and ilvaite can also occur. Open cavities within the vein system have additionally produced attractive mineral specimens, including well-crystallized calcite and quartz associated with metallic sulfides.
