About Rolling Hills Dolomite
Rolling Hills Dolomite, often marketed as Wave Dolomite, is prized for its flowing, wave-like bands that sweep across the stone in warm tans, soft pinks, creams, and rich reddish tones. These rhythmic layers formed as successive sheets of fine sediments—rich in carbonates and iron minerals—were repeatedly deposited, compacted, and subtly deformed over geologic time. The gentle curvature of the bands isn’t random; it reflects the directional pressures and natural movement within the sedimentary layers as they lithified, giving each piece the appearance of a miniature desert landscape or rolling hillside frozen in stone.
Authentic Rolling Hills Dolomite is mined almost exclusively in Chihuahua, Mexico, where unique local conditions produced this distinctively banded material. Its tight, consistent patterns and warm color palette make it a favorite for polished decorative pieces, spheres, carvings, and cabochons.
Dolomite itself can refer to both a mineral and a rock type. The mineral dolomite—calcium magnesium carbonate—is chemically similar to calcite, but with magnesium substituting for some of the calcium. When a sedimentary rock is composed predominantly of this mineral, it’s known as dolostone. Dolostone often contains a mix of other minerals such as quartz, feldspar, and calcite, which can influence its hardness, color, and patterning. In the case of Rolling Hills Dolomite, these mineral impurities help accentuate the contrasting layers that make this stone so visually striking.
