About Zebra Calcite
Zebra calcite, also known as "phantom calcite" or "butterfly calcite," is a striking variety of calcite characterized by bold, contrasting bands of black, white, cream, and brown. These layered patterns resemble the stripes of a zebra, giving the stone its name. Zebra calcite forms through the rhythmic precipitation of calcium carbonate in cavities or fractures within limestone or other host rocks. Over time, variations in mineral content, pressure, and temperature during the deposition process create alternating light and dark bands. The darker layers typically contain inclusions of manganese or other minerals, while the lighter bands are composed of purer calcite.
