7" Brilliant Peacock Ore - Mexico

This is a small, flashy piece of peacock ore from Mexico. Like the eponymous bird, this mineral displays a wide variety of colors.

Commonly referred to as Peacock Ore due to it's brilliant iridescent coloration, it is acid treated Chalcopyrite. This acid treatment mimics a natural process which results in the much rarer copper based mineral Bornite.

Chalcopyrite is a brass-yellow colored mineral which is one of the most important ores of copper. When weathered chalcopyrite loses it's metallic luster, turning a gray-green color. When acids are present the tarnish can develop a red to blue to purple iridescence.
