9.2" Polished Hematite (Harlequin) Quartz Heart - 11.25 lbs
This is a huge 9.2" wide polished heart hand-carved from hematite quartz, frequently referred to as harlequin quartz. The coloration is a wonderful combination of deep pinks, oranges, and reds. This heart weighs 11.25 pounds.
Hematoid quartz, also commonly referred to as Harlequin Quartz, is the name for quartz that contains heavy concentrations of Hematite or Limonite. The inclusions of these iron based minerals results in interest reddish-orange phantoms within the quartz which can have a wispy appearance. Often this quartz is heat treated to enhance and darken the color but the specimens we have are natural.
Silicon Dioxide, also known as SiO2 or Quartz, is the second most abundant mineral in the Earth's crust. Quartz crystals generally grow in silica-rich, hot watery solutions called hydrothermal environments, at temperatures between 100°C and 450°C, and usually under very high pressure. Quartz veins are formed when open fissures are filled with hot water during the closing stages of mountains forming, and can be hundreds of millions of years old.
