.91" Green Moldavite Tektite (4.1 grams) - Czech Republic

This is a new addition to the FossilEra website! It's an authentic moldavite tektite specimen that was collected in the Czech Republic. It has beautiful green coloration and excellent translucency.

This specimen measures .91" wide and weighs 4.1 grams.

Moldavite is a tektite that is assumed to be around 15 million years old. This material is a projectile glass that was formed as the result of terrestrial silicates becoming super-heated after a meteorite impact. The glass will often appear as a translucent forest green, though it has been known to occur in lighter shades of olive green and, occasionally, yellow-green. True moldavite is exceptionally rare, occurring only across central Europe, primarily the Czech Republic and Germany. The Ries and Steinheim Impact Craters are thought to be the birthplace of moldavite, as location and age are consistent across the glass and craters. Because of its rarity, moldavite is often replicated, so finding real, authentic moldavite is difficult.
