1.8" Petrified Wood Pocket Stones

These are polished pocket stones made from petrified wood that's collected in Indonesia. The colors of this wood are reminiscent of some Madagascar, Triassic-aged Araucaria petrified wood specimens. This petrified wood is likely Miocene in age.

They average about 1.8" across, but being hand polished from a natural stone they can vary slightly in size, color and patterning. The pictures are representative of the stone(s) you will receive.

Petrified wood is the name given to wood that has been turned into stone (fossilized) through the process of permineralization. In this process, all of the organic matter becomes replaced by minerals, while much of the original structure, such as tree rings, is retained. For this to happen, the wood needs to be buried in an environment low in oxygen to prevent decomposition and with flowing, mineral-laden water, so minerals may replace structures. The coloration is caused by various minerals that present in that water during fossilization. For example, red colors are due to iron compounds, greens due to copper, and so on.

The stone is polished into an oval shape and rounded on all sides. Polished stones of this size and shape are generally referred to as pocket stones since they will easily fit into a pocket. The pictures are representative of the stone you will receive, but there will be some variation in colors and patterning.
