1.1" Kainops Trilobite - Black Cat Mountain, Oklahoma

This is a 1.1" long, disarticulated specimen of Kainops raymondi from the Lower Devonian Haragan Formation of Oklahoma. It was carefully prepared under a microscope using air-abrasive techniques to expose the fine details of the exoskeleton. The left side of it's head is missing.

Kainops can sometimes be confused with the similar trilobite Paciphacops, which occurs in the same layers. One of the easiest ways to distinguish the two is by examining the eyes. Kainops possesses substantially more individual eye facets than Paciphacops, making the eyes an important diagnostic feature for identifying the genus.

The Black Cat Mountain Quarry produces a limited number of arguably the most beautiful trilobites in the United States each year. Each specimen is meticulously prepared by quarry owner Bob Carroll under microscope to expose the smallest details. This is a very time consuming process, taking many hours, but yields spectacular results.
