1.4" Oligocene Fossil Fish (Clupea sardinites) - Poland

This is a 1.4" long partial fish of the species Clupea sardinites (Heckel, 1850) preserved on a slab of limestone. It comes out of the nannofossil biozone NP24 of the Jaslo Limestone near Sobniów, Poland.


Clupea sardinites is an extinct species of clupeiform ray-finned fish in the family Clupeidae. Fish in this family are mostly marine forage fish, although a few species are found in fresh water. Clupeids typically feed on small planktonic animals, and range from .8" to 30" in length.

There is a repaired crack through the rock/fossil.
