1.4" Pliocene Fossil Hickory Tree (Carya) Nut - France
This is a beautifully detailed, 1.4" wide hickory tree (Carya nux-taurinensis) nut fossil, collected in Alsace, France. It is Pliocene (Zanclean) in age, or approximately 5.3 to 3.6 million years old. Historically these fossils would have been assigned the species globosa, however this is now widely considered a younger heterotypic synonym of Carya nux-taurinensis.
