1.8" Polished Amber With Detailed Fossil Ant (15 g) - Mexico

This is a nicely polished piece of amber, collected from Chiapas, Mexico. It is 1.8" wide, and bares a wonderful golden-yellow color. This amber specimen is completely unaltered, and contains bug inclusions that can best be viewed under microscope. One of the fossil bug inclusions is an ant (family Formicidae) that's near one edge of the amber. There is at least 1 other bug inclusion, however it's not clear or large enough to conclusively identify.

Amber is fossilized tree resin that sometimes contains inclusions such as plant matter, fungi, and insects. This amber comes from mines in Chiapas, Mexico, and was formed during the Early/Middle Miocene (15-23 million years ago). The amber was produced by either the two extinct leguminous trees Hymenaea mexicana or Hymenaea allendis, both of which were initially described from fossil flowers included in Mexican amber.
