This is a beautifully preserved, 1.95" wide fossil butternut tree nut (Juglans bergomensis), collected in Auenheim, France. It is Pliocene (Zanclean) in age, or approximately 5.3 to 3.6 million years old. Juglans bergomensis refers to the fossilized nuts of an extinct ancestor to the North American butternut tree.
