13" Fossil Running Rhino (Hyracodon) Skull - South Dakota

This is a jaw dropping, 13" long skull of the running rhino, Hyracodon nebrascensis. It was collected from the Brule Formation in South Dakota and would be approximately 30-34 million years old. It's one of if not the best Hyracodon skulls that we have seen due to its level of preservation. In particular the teeth are in exceptionally nice condition.

This specimen includes the upper skull and mandible which are held together by the rock they were found in. The natural bone preserved well, though some sections of bone weren't recoverable and required restoration which I elaborate on below.

All of the teeth on the maxilla and mandible are natural and haven't undergone any restoratiob. Much of the nasal bone has been restored, with restoration continuing down the right and left side of the maxilla, stopping about 1-2" above the molars. The nuchal crest has been restored, along with portion of the right and left zygomatic arches. The angles of both the right and left side of the mandible have been restored.

It comes with a display stand.

Hyracodons were hornless running rhinoceroses with large heads compared to their slight, pony-like bodies. They are an extinct line, though: we're sure you've noticed that there are no rhinos browsing the plains of North America today.
