8.95" Inflated Fossil Tortoise (Testudo) w/ Limb Bone - South Dakota
This is an 8.95" long shell (carapace and plastron) of an Oligocene-aged tortoise (Testudo thomsoni) from the White River Formation in the Badlands of South Dakota. This is the rarer of the two genera of fossil tortoise found in the White River Formation, the other being Stylemys. The animal's limb bone has been exposed from the rock.
It comes with an acrylic display stand.
The majority of the shell is in good condition with minimal crushing. There are some areas around the marginal scutes that required gap fill restoration, though none of this restoration is significant. The plastron has a notable section of gap fill restoration where it fragmented, as well as some restoration along the posterior (xiphiplastron) edge.
