2.25" Spiny Comura Trilobite - Ofaten, Morocco

This is an exceptional 2.25" long Comura bultyncki trilobite from Ofaten, Morocco. Specimens of this species are renowned for their ornate, highly spined exoskeletons, which likely served as both armor and a deterrent to the predators of the Devonian seas. Comura also possessed large compound eyes with thousands of individual lenses—an adaptation that would have given it excellent vision in the sunlit reef environments it once inhabited. Their extravagant spines and elaborate ornamentation make them one of the most sought-after and visually striking trilobite species ever discovered.

Preparing a trilobite of this quality requires remarkable skill—60+ hours of precise work under microscope. The delicate, free-standing spines have been expertly exposed, and even the individual eye facets in both eyes are clearly visible.

This specimen only has about 1% shell restoration in total.

About Trilobites

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
