2.5" Polished Petoskey Stone (Fossil Coral) - Michigan

This is a beautiful piece of fossil coral (Hexagonaria percarinata) from Michigan. It has been polished to a glossy finish across the majority of the specimen. The polish really allows for the detailed structures of the coral head to be seen.

About Petoskey Stones

Known locally as Petoskey stones, this fossil coral is commonly found along the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, as well as in rock quarries stretching from Alpena to Traverse City, Michigan. The material comes from Hexagonaria percarinata, a species of rugose coral that lived during the Middle Devonian, roughly 350 million years ago. Petoskey stones are officially designated as the state stone of Michigan.
