2.5" Rare, Spiny Heliopeltis Trilobite - Issoumour, Morocco

This is an incredible, spiny, Corynexochid trilobite. It is a 2.5" long Heliopeltis johnsoni from Issoumour, Morocco. This trilobite is literally all spines, with a very small thorax and dramatic occipital spines.

The species is incredibly rare to find complete and this specimen is a composite, it has been pieced together from multiple specimens or possibly one disarticulad specimen. That is the reason for the low price given the rarity of the trilobite.

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
