2.65" Bug-Eyed Coltraneia Trilobite Fossil - Top Quality Specimen

This is a top quality, 2.65" long, prone Coltraneia trilobite with amazing "tower eyes" full of hundreds of eye facets. The genus has often been referred to as Treveropyge in the past. It was quarried at Ofaten Mountain, Morocco.

This specimen is certainly in the top 1% of examples we've seen of the species. It is large, laid out prone, and the preparation is fantastic. There is less than 1% restoration in a few tiny spots on the shell.

About Trilobites

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
