3.3" Flying Crotalocephalina Trilobite - Exposed Hyposteme
This is an exceptional 3.3" specimen of Crotalocephalina gibbus from Atchana, Morocco. Expertly prepared, it displays outstanding shell detail and a dramatic “flying” pose — the surrounding limestone has been meticulously removed so the trilobite appears suspended above its base on a slender pedestal. This type of preparation requires many hours of precision work but creates a stunning, lifelike presentation. Only about 1% of the shell has been restored, and the hypostome (mouthplate) is fully exposed beneath the head.
About Trilobites
Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
