About Sauropelta
Sauropelta ("shield lizard") is the genus of a large, North American nodosaurid dinosaur, of which one species has been named (Sauropelta edwardsorum). Thanks to a well-preserved specimen that includes a near-complete skull, it's one of the most well-understood nodosaurids, with fossilized remains recovered in the states of Wyoming, Montana, and possibly Utah.
Sauropelta had more teeth in its lower jaw than most other nodosaurids. The back of the skull was much broader than the snout, and the top of the skull was flat. The upper surfaces of its body and tail were covered in oval bone plates that formed a continuous armor covering. Long, conical spikes projected upward and sideways from its neck and shoulders. It had been thought that only a single row of spikes was present on each side of its neck, but new work has show that there were two rows on each side.
