Large, 3.4" Polished Amber With Ants & Flies (23 g) - Mexico

This is a very large piece of amber from Chiapas, Mexico with multiple insect inclusions. It is 3.4" wide, and bares a wonderful golden-yellow color. This amber specimen is completely unaltered, and contains bug inclusions that can best be viewed under microscope. Four of the bug fossil inclusions are quite detailed; two of which are ants (Family Formicidae) while the other two are flies (Order Diptera). There are at least 3 other bug inclusions, however they're not large or clear enough to conclusively identify.

Amber is fossilized tree resin that sometimes contains inclusions such as plant matter, fungi, and insects. This amber comes from mines in Chiapas, Mexico, and was formed during the Early/Middle Miocene (15-23 million years ago). The amber was produced by either the two extinct leguminous trees Hymenaea mexicana or Hymenaea allendis, both of which were initially described from fossil flowers included in Mexican amber.
