This is a premium, table-top–sized round of Jurassic petrified wood from the Junggar Basin of China, cut from the heart of a large, beautifully preserved log. Measuring 32 x 22.1 inches and just over 1" thick, it’s substantial enough to serve as a striking small table top, wall installation, or standalone display. The included adjustable metal stand offers versatile presentation options.
One face has been expertly polished to a true mirror finish—free of dull spots, haze, or scuffing—bringing out the natural reddish-brown, white, and orange tones that make this specimen so visually extraordinary. A spectacular centerpiece for any fossil lovers home or office.
Please note: the rough petrified wood was legally exported from China years before the broad fossil export restrictions went into effect in 2011.
What Is Petrified Wood
Petrified wood is the name given to wood that has been turned into stone (fossilized) through the process of permineralization. In this process, all of the organic matter becomes replaced by minerals, while much of the original structure, such as tree rings, is retained. For this to happen, the wood needs to be buried in an environment low in oxygen to prevent decomposition and with flowing, mineral-laden water, so minerals may replace structures. The coloration is caused by various minerals/impurities present in the water during fossilization. For example, red colors in many cases can be attributed to iron compounds, greens due to copper, and so on.
