4.6" Cut/Polished Agatized Dinosaur Vertebra - Colorado

This is a centrum of an agatized dinosaur vertebrae which was cut and half and polished to reveal the beautifully preserved internal cell structure. The centrum was found heavily eroded out our partners private quarry, east of Dinosaur, CO this past year. Both halves are included.

Agatized dinosaur bone is a rare form of fossilized dinosaur bone where the original fossilized bone has been re-mineralized (replaced) with silica based compounds (agate, jasper, chalcedony, or opal).

It comes from the Morrison formation of Colorado and is collected from our partner private quarry. The agatized bone is either found as fragments on the surface from bones or partial bones that have long since been destroyed by exposure to the elements, or as broken and tumbled chunks in event layers of the quarry. It could have come from any of a number of dinosaurs from this formation, though sometimes based on cell size and outer appearance the type can be narrowed down.
