5.4" Free-Standing, Petoskey Stone (Fossil Coral) Section - Michigan

This is a 5.4" tall, cut section of fossil coral (Hexagonaria percarinata) from Michigan. It has been coated with an epoxy providing a glossy finish and the base is cut flat so that it displays nicely on a hard surface. A thin sheet of cork has been applied to the base to present scratching of the display surface.

About Petoskey Stones

Known locally as Petoskey stones, this fossil coral is commonly found along the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, as well as in rock quarries stretching from Alpena to Traverse City, Michigan. The material comes from Hexagonaria percarinata, a species of rugose coral that lived during the Middle Devonian, roughly 350 million years ago. Petoskey stones are officially designated as the state stone of Michigan.
