5.9" Partial Fossil Early Pig (Perchoerus) Skull - South Dakota

What we have here is an uncommon fossil of the early pig, Perchoerus probus. The specimen features a partial upper skull with several natural teeth, measuring 5.9" long. It was collected from the Brule Formation in South Dakota and would be approximately 30-32 million years old.

It is accompanied by an acrylic display stand to assist with preferred presentation.

Perchoerus is an extinct genus of suine found in Eocene and Oligocene-aged deposits of North America. Three species are known, which include Perchoerus minor, Perchoerus nanus, and Perchoerus probus, of which Perchoerus minor was the smallest, about the size of a house cat. While often considered a peccary, other studies have reclassified it as a basal suine outside of either peccaries or Suidae.
