6.4" Fossil Oreodont (Merycoidodon) Skull On Metal Stand - Nebraska

This is a fantastic, 6.4" long skull of an Oreodont (Merycoidodon sp.). It was collected from the the Chadron Formation in Nebraska and would be approximately 30-33 million years old. The bone preservation of this skull is incredible considering most skulls are typically found crushed and heavily fragmented/disarticulated. It required no restoration, though there are some repaired cracks at the posterior end of the skull and through the mandible. The rock has been left within the large gaps between bone to ensure the skull holds together.

The skull has been mounted to a labeled metal display stand, giving it a unique and eye-catching presentation.

Oreodonts are an extinct mammal most closely related to camels and pigs. They have no close relatives living today. They were herbivorous, with short faces and fang-like canine teeth. About the size of a sheep, they roamed the plains of North America in huge numbers during the Oligocene period.
