Cluster Of Kainops Trilobite - Black Cat Mountain, Oklahoma
This is a cool piece containing two complete Kainops raymondi trilobites along with one partial. Both of the complete ones are around 1.35" long and the rock is 5.3x4.3". Nice preparation work showing off all of the detail including eye facets in their eyes.
There is a second very similar species found in the same layers called Paciphacops. The most easily identifiable, distinguishing feature is the number of eye facets. Kainops has substantially more eye facets than Paciphacops does.

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet with over 25k currently described species, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to a hard exoskeleton (shell), they left an excellent fossil record.
