Huge Hammatoceras Ammonite Sculpture

This is an exceptional display piece with a huge 9.5" wide Hammatoceras ammonite mounted on a sculpted block of matrix along with 5 Pseudogrammoceras ammonites and a nautilus. The Pseudogrammoceras range from about 2 1/2 to 6 inches wide. The entire display stands 20" high and weighs nearly30 pounds. It makes for a very impressive display.

These ammonites were quarried in the Rhône-Alpes region of France and are Lower Jurassic in age, approximately 180 million years old. These ammonites are very infrequently seen on the commercial market compared to those from other countries such as Madagascar and Morocco.

This sculpture is a composite, meaning that while the ammonite fossils are real they have been mounted in an artificial matrix to create the display. All of the ammonites on this display were quarried from the same layer. There is some restoration work on most of the ammonites.
