Oligocene Fossil "Rabbit" (Palaeolagus) Partial Skeleton -Wyoming
This amazing specimen features a rabbit-like lagomorph (Palaeolagus haydeni) upper skull, lower jaw, and limb bones with an in-situ presentation. The skull measures 1.4" long and and the entire specimen is 4.3" tall. It was collected from the Oligocene-aged White River Formation in Converse County, Wyoming. Rabbit skulls/bones are quite fragile and lightweight, and are rarely found complete. In fact, the environments that many lagomorphs inhabited were not ideal for preserving fossils.
There are two flat cut surfaces on the rock allowing for preferred presentation.

Palaeolagus is a genus of lagomorph that resembled modern day rabbits. These small mammals had a skeleton that was very similar to rabbits, but the hind legs were shorter, suggesting that they didn't leap or hop. They lived during the Oligocene epoch and fossil records indicate that they only inhabited North America.
