Lot: 22 Lbs Free-Standing Polished Orange Calcite - 4 Pieces

This is a wholesale lot of 22 lbs of beautiful, polished blue calcite from Madagascar. The lot is made up of 4 pieces measuring from approximately 6 to 7 1/2" across/tall. Each piece has the bottom cut flat allowing them to stand upright on a flat surface and create a beautiful display without the need of a stand. Some of the pieces have some small dings or scratches.

This orange calcite was mined from the Norcross-Madagascar orange calcite quarry. This type of calcite likely occurred as a massive conglomerate, formed as mineral-rich water solidified following accumulation as flowstone and/or through precipitative processes.

Calcite, CaCO3, is a carbonate mineral and the most stable polymorph of calcium carbonate. The other polymorphs are the minerals aragonite and vaterite. Calcite crystals are trigonal-rhombohedral, though actual calcite rhombohedra are rare as natural crystals. However, they show a remarkable variety of habits including acute to obtuse rhombohedra, tabular forms, and prisms. Calcite exhibits several twinning types, adding to the variety of observed forms. It may occur as fibrous, granular, lamellar, or compact. Cleavage is usually in three directions parallel to the rhombohedron form. Its fracture is conchoidal, but difficult to obtain.
